what is impeachment?

The word impeachment refers to the process of Congress attempting to take a president out of office. Article II of the Constitution says “The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” Impeachment does not automatically mean that the president has to leave the office, it it's just the process attached to it. If the president is found guilty through the

the impeachment trials, then they would be taken out of office. While there have been many cases of impeachment in US History, but there has never been a case where a president was actually taken out of office. The most famous impeachment was Richard Nixon because of his involvement in the Watergate Scandal. Nixon was convicted of three articles of impeachment, obstruction of justice, violating the constitutional rights of citizens, and abuse of power. Even though he was convicted, he would resign from office to avoid any of the punishments he faced. He would be pardoned by his successor a month later. How is one impeached? The House of Representatives decides to bring forth impeachment proceedings against a president, while the Senate holds the trial that decides whether the defendant should be removed from office. The House Judiciary Committee, when they believe that an elected officials has committed something that could be considered an impeachable act, conducts an official investigation. If they do find wrongdoing the Committee will then recommend articles of impeachment to the full House. Then the full house will vote on the articles of impeachment, and if any one gets a majority vote, then the president will be considered impeached. Once the investigation is complete, with the Senate hearing testimony, then the members will vote for or against taking the president out of office. If the majority votes to have the president removed from office then legally they are no longer the President of the United States.
