what are political conventions?

The year of a election each political party has a convention to formally nominate their candidate for the president and vice-president. During this event the party will also unify, and fully decide on the platform the party is going to use their nominee elected. In 2020, because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, most of the events at the Democratic Convention have been switched to virtual events, rather than being held in Milwaukee. The online convention began on August 17, 2020 and lasted 4 days. Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris were officially nominated.

The Republican Convention, which was set to take place in Jacksonville, Florida, as recently as July 23, has been cancelled officially by President Trump. He cited concerns about Florida’s rising COVID-19 cases as the cause for cancellation. A completely online convention begun on August 25, 2020. Donald Trump and his running mate Mike Pence were officially nominated.
